Non-Conforming No More

25 May 2017

The Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ) thoroughly supports and commends The Hon Mick de Brenni MP, Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Sport on his move against non-conforming products being used in the building and construction industry.

For too long has the policing of non-conforming and substandard products rested solely on the installers shoulders, allowing a legal “black market” of substandard and sometimes dangerous products to be imported and sold.

For far too long cavalier importers have had little or no respect for consumers safety, instead concentrating solely on profit. This carte blanche attitude sees thousands of products currently sitting on the shelves of major retailers unrestricted, with the consumer unaware that the importation and sale of non-conforming products has been perfectly legal.

MPAQ believes there is an urgent need to reform the current system to provide specifiers, purchasers, installers and certifiers with a clear mechanism to determine whether products are fit-for-purpose as defined under the National Construction Code. More must be done to remove non-conforming products at the point of sale and to proactively identify and remove from our buildings non-confirming products that slip through the net.

With these proposed changes, Minister de Brenni is putting the safety of Queenslanders first.
