Landmark Building Industry Fairness Legislation Bill Passes through Parliament

Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ) Executive Director, Penny Cornah, has applauded the Government for passing important, much-needed fairness laws today.

Through Parliament, legislation has passed that plumbing and trade contractor businesses have been asking for, to usher in a new age of fairness in our industry.

Ms Cornah has heavily advocated and persisted with the Minister for Housing and Public Works, the Hon. Mick de Brenni MP on behalf of the plumbing and gas industry. Through her suggestions and guidance to the Minister of what the Association’s members and industry as a whole is needing to ensure fairer measures for subcontractors, we will finally see positive steps for tradies in the space of security of payments.

“Finally the subcontractors will be treated fairly for getting paid on time and in full. We would not expect a nurse to work seven shifts and only get paid for three, and this is what is happening to hardworking tradies every day in Queensland,” Ms Cornah said.

“There is not a single plumber in Queensland that has not experienced non-payment or extreme late payment on money owed for work done. There’s now going to be a solution to prevent this sort of thing happening in the future.”

Ms Cornah said that this is an important and positive step forward that will benefit tradie’s businesses and create a security that will extend into their personal lives.

“What has been an annual burden of over $3 billion across our country will hopefully now be significantly reduced. It is not too much to ask that people should get paid for the work they have already completed, and done well,” Ms Cornah stated.

“MPAQ commends the Government for taking our feedback on board and passing this legislation, which will make a positive impact on the industry as a whole.”

MPAQ represents over 1,300 plumbing and gas businesses across Queensland and has been advocating for security of payment reforms for many years.
