Adult Apprentice Wage Increase Update
On Monday 22 June 2020, we notified our members that the Fair Work Commission announced a 1.75% increase to the National Minimum Wage and all Modern Awards. The announcement outlined that the increase will be applied on a staggered basis with the Group 1 increase to commence from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2020. The plumbing industry (Group 2, including Clerical employees) will see the increase take effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 November 2020.
The increase to Group 1, meant there was uncertainty for adult apprentices within the plumbing industry. Under the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award 2010, Clause 20.3(b)(iii) provides:
the amount prescribed for apprentices generally in clause 20.2; whichever is the greater.
This meant that adult apprentices within the plumbing industry would increase from 1 July, while the rest of our industry will increase from 1 November 2020.
Due to this anomaly of the increase to be applied and also the administrative burden this would place on our members, Master Plumbers’ Australia made a submission to have the Adult Apprentice rates increased in line with the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award 2010.
We are pleased to announce that Master Plumbers’ Australia has been successful in this submission to the Fair Work Commission and have sought a determination that adult apprentice wage rates will increase from the first full pay period on or after 1 November 2020 instead of 1 July 2020
MPAQ will be updating the current wage sheets and they will be available on our website to MPAQ members prior to 1 November 2020 for all Group 2 Awards and prior to the 1 February 2021 for Group 3 Awards, subject to the information being released by Fair Work.
