Fuel Cell Gas Device Approval Authorities
Now Available in Queensland
Fuel cells are Type B Gas Devices in Queensland. Section 731AA of the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (the Act) requires all gas devices be approved before installation or use.
Under section 731AD of the Act, the Chief Inspector may grant a Gas Device Approval Authority (GDAA) that authorises the holder to undertake gas device approval work within the scope specified in the granted authority. Until recently, the specified scope of existing authorities did not include electro-chemical reaction devices (fuel cell gas systems).
The Chief Inspector has now approved three GDAAs specifically for gas devices that use fuel gas by way of electro-chemical reaction (fuel cells).
Anyone wanting to install and use a fuel cell, whether mobile or stationary, can use one of these GDAAs to have the device approved in Queensland.

Additionally, the Chief Inspector has approved the use of fuel cells in vehicles that are type approved to “UN R 134 Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicles and their components with regard to the safety-related performance of hydrogen-fuelled vehicles (HFCV) [2019/795]”.
This means that vehicles that have type approval to the UN R 134 regulation do not require any further approvals for use in Queensland.
