MPAQ welcomes new apprentice incentives to help employers build Queensland's future

The Master Plumbers' Association of Queensland (MPAQ) has welcomed the Queensland Government's announcement of new apprentice incentive programs, describing them as an important step towards helping employers invest in the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

The announcement includes the new TradieStart program, supporting up to 2,500 new construction apprenticeships, alongside the extension of the successful Small Business Apprenticeship Program, which will support a further 2,000 apprentices.

Together, the initiatives will create opportunities for 4,500 new construction apprentices across Queensland while providing practical financial assistance to employers taking on apprentices.

MPAQ Chief Executive Officer Penny Cornah said the Association had consistently advocated for greater support for employers, recognising that businesses carry the responsibility and cost of training Queensland's future tradespeople.

"Queensland's plumbing industry has been calling for stronger employer incentives because we know that apprenticeships begin with businesses willing to invest in people," Ms Cornah said.

"Employers are the ones creating career opportunities, providing on the job training and developing the skilled workforce our state depends on."

Under the TradieStart program, eligible small businesses employing their first apprentice can receive a $10,000 payment, with additional incentives available for mature age apprentices and priority cohorts including women, First Nations people, veterans and people with disability.

"These incentives will make it easier for more businesses, particularly small businesses, to employ apprentices and build capability within their own workforce," Ms Cornah said.

"Reducing the financial barriers for employers is one of the most effective ways to increase apprenticeship commencements and improve long term workforce capacity."

The announcement aligns with MPAQ's ongoing advocacy for practical measures that support employers while encouraging greater participation in the trades.

"Queensland has a significant pipeline of housing, infrastructure and community projects ahead. Building that future depends on having enough qualified tradespeople, and that starts with employers having the confidence to take on apprentices today." MPAQ encourages eligible plumbing businesses to explore the new funding opportunities and continue investing in the next generation of plumbers.
