Queenslanders to benefit from new bill busting energy efficient appliance rebate – including solar and heat pump water systems

Rebates of up to $1,000 are now available to help Queensland Households buy new energy efficient appliances that help lower their power bills.

The $22 million program is an initiative of the state government to help ease the financial pressure of rising costs of living. The rebates are available for washing machines, fridges, dryers, dishwashers, air-conditioners, and hot water systems.

All Queensland households are eligible for financial assistance of up to $800, with rebates up to $1000 available for eligible low-income households. To be eligible for a low-income rebate you must meet all eligibility criteria and provide a Notice of Assessment or other advice from the ATO that aligns with the ATO individual low-income tax threshold. Only appliances purchased and installed after the program opens will be eligible for a rebate. The rebate will apply to appliances if the applicant is a resident of the dwelling. Only one rebate per household is available.

As part of the $62 billion Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, the rebate will help households manage electricity use and reduce carbon emissions. For example, upgrading from a 2 star to 4 star energy efficient appliance could save you up to $134 on your energy bill and cut your carbon emissions by up to 0.35 tonnes each year. Or switching to an energy efficient hot water system could cut your bill by up to $1118 and reduce your carbon emissions by up to 2.96 tonnes yearly.

What does this mean for plumbers and gasfitters?

MPAQ has met with the department of Energy and Public Works to provide feedback about the administration of the program and was advised the importance of using a licensed person with the correct endorsement on their licence to install solar and heat pump water systems.

For the rebate to be approved, the system must be installed by an appropriately licenced tradesperson.

MPAQ is offering a QBCC-approved online course for plumbers who wish to gain an endorsement on their licence to install solar and heat pump water heating systems.
