This is an accredited five-day course that is one of the four Certificate IV units required to transition from an interim gas licence to a full gas licence in Queensland.
This course offers comprehensive training on current legislation and best practices for working with Type A gas appliances, combining classroom instruction with practical, hands-on learning. Participants will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to:
- Diagnose and repair faults in domestic and commercial Type A gas appliances
- Perform servicing and commissioning tasks
- Conduct leak testing procedures
- Test and commission appliances in workplace settings
The course ensures participants are equipped to work safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with industry standards.
Prerequisites
There are prerequisites for this course:
- CPCPCM2043 Carry out WHS requirements
- CPCPGS3053 Disconnect and reconnect Type A gas appliances
If you have completed these units in your prior studies, you must send an academic transcript to the Training Services Team along with your enrolment form.
If you haven’t completed these units, the Training Services Team will be able to provide you with options for how you can complete these units prior to attending the class for CPCPGS4022 Service Type A gas appliances. There may be costs associated to complete the prerequisites (please see the Fees and Subsidies tab for more information).

Unique Student Identifier
Students must also possess a valid USI.
All learners undertaking nationally accredited training must possess a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). The USI is an individual education number that allows learners to access their training records and results at any time. If learners do not possess a valid USI while undertaking accredited training they will be unable to receive a Statement of Attainment.
Course Delivery
This course is delivered over 40 hours (generally five consecutive eight-hour days) face to face in a classroom setting.
This course requires a theoretical assessment and a practical assessment be completed on site while supervised by the MPAQ trainer.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this course learners will be able to:
- apply safety and quality assurance requirements and demonstrate effective work methods relevant to Type A gas appliances;
- disassemble and assemble Type A gas appliances;
- diagnose and remedy electrical and electronic circuitry faults;
- diagnose and remedy gas system faults on Type A gas appliances;
- convert Type A gas appliances to another gas type; and
- identify and complete all relevant documentation.
Course Recognition
On successful completion of this course learners will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

- Members: $1,350* (GST Free)
- Associate Members: $1,620.50* (GST Free)
- Non-members: $1,800* (GST Free)

MPAQ Member Discount
MPAQ members (excluding associate retired and associate apprentices) are eligible for a discount on MPAQ courses.
In order to access the discount you must fulfil one of the following eligibility requirements:
- You must be a member for at least one year if paying for membership monthly; or
- You must pay for your membership upfront for one year.

Additional Fees
Additional fees may apply for the process of applying for your full Gas licence in Queensland. These fees and charges will be incurred from the Resources, Safety and Health Queensland and any issues with these fees should be raised directly with them.
