Plumbing And Navigating Contaminated Floodwaters A Priority After Floods
 (15).png)
Following the floods and impact of Ex-TC Alfred on South East Queensland and Hervey Bay, MPAQ is urging residents to not become complacent and place plumbing checks at the top of the priority list along with electrical work.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact a licensed Master Plumber to check on:
- Septic overflows (contamination of surrounding area due to ingress of water)
- Silted drains (drains being full of silt due to muddy flood waters)
- Gas regulators and burners on appliances such as hot water systems, ovens and barbecues which could be wet and blocked with silt
- Gas bottles that may have floated and caused leaks in the gas system
- Backflow valves that may need retesting to ensure correct operation
- Recycled water systems, pools, and other household pressure release points
MPAQ CEO Penny Cornah also advises the public to be cautious of overflowing drains and sewer systems that can release dangerous pathogens into the water, leading to severe illness. Floodwaters can also mix with industrial waste such as fuels, pesticides, and chemicals, making them hazardous.
Further to this, natural gas, LPG and electrical systems are particularly vulnerable during floods with gas leaks, submerged meters and appliances.
MPAQ underlines the importance of avoiding contact with floodwaters. Assume all floodwater is contaminated and hazardous.
Even if tap water looks clear after a flood, it may still be contaminated. You may need to boil or treat water before use. Always follow local water safety advisories.
MPAQ advises consumers to beware of scammers offering repairs or services in the wake of the floods and wild weather. They should call a Master Plumber as they hold the appropriate plumbing licenses and QBCC licenses. All plumbing work must be performed by a licensed plumber.
