The Queensland Government has announced a comprehensive review into Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), aimed at restoring confidence in the state’s resources safety framework and ensuring the highest safety standards for workers.
This review will assess the structure and function of RSHQ, the role of the Resources Safety Commissioner, and the effectiveness of supporting advisory committees. The goal is to determine whether the current model is delivering the best possible safety outcomes for workers in the resources sector, or if changes are required.
As part of the Government’s commitment to integrity, leadership, and accountability, an Interim Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health has been appointed. Ken Singer, a respected figure with nearly four decades of experience in the mining sector, will lead RSHQ during this critical period. Mr Singer brings credibility and deep industry knowledge, having worked across underground coal operations and held senior regulatory and safety leadership roles.
The review will consider:
- The structure and performance of RSHQ.
- The role and effectiveness of the Resources Safety Commissioner.
- The function of advisory committees supporting the regulatory framework.
- Potential modifications or alternative models that could improve safety and health outcomes across the industry.
With regional Queensland relying heavily on a strong and sustainable resources sector, ensuring worker safety is paramount. Everyone working in the industry deserves to return home safely. Now is the right time for a stocktake, to ensure it’s delivering the best possible outcomes for the resources workforce. This review will be consultative, engaging with industry, safety experts, government agencies, and unions.
